Forbidden Love Romeo and Juliet and The Westside Story are terrific books that have many similarity and differences. Romeo and Juliet is about a young love that their parents don’t get along and will not allow them to see each other. The Westside Story is about two gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. A member from the Jets, Anton, falls in love with a member from the Shark’s sister, Maria. The two gangs don’t get along. These two books turn up having a lot in common, but have many that they don’t have in common. These two stories have a different time setting. Romeo and Juliet took place in the 1400s in Italy. The Westside Story took place in New York City in the 1950s. They have different ways for speaking. Romeo and Juliet have that Shakespear way of communicating, but The Westside Story has more way of talking the every we do now in days. In the Westside Story they didn’t like each other because of race. In Romeo and Juliet, they cant be together because their parents don’t like each other. Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet. These two families have hate each other from many centuries, and neither family will forgive and forget the past. Also, in Romeo and Juliet, Juliet dies but, in The Westside Story, Maria lives. Even though these stories have many differences they have a lot in common. Romeo and Anton both die from their love. The boys both meet there soul mate at some type of dance. The love Anton felt for Maria and the love Romeo felt for Juliet made them deny their families. Juliet and Maria’s family both had a guy picked out for them, and they ended up loving Romeo and Anton. Juliet cut herself off from the Nurse, her parents and her social status when she followed Romeo. Maria cut loose from her family, her dead brother’s memory and her social circle when she decided to run away with Anton. There are many characters that are alike in the stories Romeo and Juliet and The Westside Story. The Sharks, in the story The Westside Story, are like the Capulets in Romeo and Juliet, and the Jets are like the Montagues. Romeo is like Tony because they are both falling in love with a woman from a rival’s family. Benvolio is like Baby John because there always wanting to keep the peace. Tybalt is Bernardo because there both a relative of Maria or Juliet, their both obsessed with fighting the other side, and Tony or Romeo kills Tybalt or Bernardo. Anita is the Nurse because they help Maria or Juliet through this hard time. Romeo and Juliet and The Westside Story are very romantic stories. I personally like Romeo and Juliet better because I don’t like musicals. I didn’t understand the musical part of the story. Even though Romeo and Juliet was hard to understand because of its traditional dialectic it was still a more romantic story. In conclusion, Romeo and Juliet and The Westside Story were both similar romantic books. There character are a lot alike. They main idea is also alike. The Westside Story is just a modern version of Romeo and Juliet.
